Greentech Calls for cleaner electronics

LONDON – In an attempt to stem health and environmental problems associated with the production, use and disposal of consumer electronics, GreenTech today announced its effort to inform industry leaders and consumers about the very real dangers of today’s hottest techno-gadgets.  Foremost in the effort is the launch of www.addictedgeek.com/green, GreenTech’s informational webpage.  GreenTech hopes this site will provide a useful forum for news and information on a variety of topics related to the electronics industry.  From the use of toxic chemicals in many household electronics, to the phenomenon of “e-dumping,” to helpful tips for consumers wanting to get involved in greening up technology, the new GreenTech site runs the gamut.

New Jersey passes recycling laws

February 13th, 2008

New Jersey became the first state in the nation to pass legislation on electronic waste recycling in 2008, with Governor Jon Corzine signing into law yesterday the “Electronic Waste Management Act,” mandating that electronics manufacturers must pay to collect and recycle old computers, TVs, laptops, and monitors from New Jersey residents, beginning in 2010.

Not all e-waste firms helping the environment

Local officials and watchdog groups warned this month that some electronic recyclers may not be the environmental stewards they claim to be.Many old electronics disposed of post-Christmas are shipped overseas to developing countries, where they become part of a “cyber-age horror story,” says the Seattle-based watchdog group Basel Action Network.
